1. What is a Kerala Kasavu saree?
The Kerala Kasavu saree is a traditional ethnic garment from the Indian state of Kerala. It is famously characterized by its elegant simplicity, featuring an unbleached cotton or silk base (usually in off-white or cream) with a striking metallic gold border.

2. What does "Kasavu" actually mean?
"Kasavu" strictly refers to the gold or silver zari (metallic thread) used in the border of the saree, not the fabric itself. The traditional off-white cotton fabric used in Kerala is called Mundu or Neriyathu. When woven with the gold thread, it becomes a Kasavu garment.

3. How should I wash and care for a Kasavu saree?
Because of the delicate zari and unbleached cotton, special care is required:

First Wash: Dry cleaning is highly recommended, especially for pure zari sarees.

Hand Washing: If washing at home, use cold water and a mild baby shampoo or soap-nut (reetha). Never use harsh bleach or heavy detergents.

Drying: Do not wring the saree. Gently squeeze out the water and dry it in the shade. Direct sunlight will cause the off-white fabric to yellow and the gold border to fade.

Ironing: Always iron on the reverse side of the Kasavu border on a low-heat setting to prevent the gold from losing its shine.
